Anyone who knows me knows about by complete obsession for food, so it comes as no surprise to most when I get hysterical about a new restaurant on the block. This post is no different, and boy can I hardly wait.
You may know him as the guy who helped you get your Jika on for the past 2 summers, Charlie Brown’s human pal or simply just that lead singer of Micasa…BUT catchy tjoons, the voice of an angel and smooth moves is just one part(or 3) of the J Something we all adore. If like me food is your everything and Instagram is your bible for all things trendy and blissful, you will also know that food and cooking makes up the other part of SA’s beloved singer on the passion front.
I remember the year 2013 vaguely. Argo winning Best Film at the critics Choice awards, Beyonce’s jaw-dropping performance at the Super Bowl, The Harlem Shake (yawn), the start of Orange is the new black oh and how could I forget, GTA V. But I also remember one Instagram post in particular by J Something. Now I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was his first post displaying delicious looking edibles on a plate but it was, however, the first time I had really taken notice of it. Captioned “Seafood paella made by yours truly” with the hashtag #SomethingsCooking, it was at this point that I started following J’s culinary journey on Instagram.
Day after day, post after post, he stirred up cravings I never knew I had for delicious food that was unique to not only South Africa but other regions too. From English muffins and paella to pap and vleis and tacos, each meal looked better than the previous.
Something’s Cooking by J
2014 saw J debut his first cooking show on Mzansi Magic titled a very clever Something’s cooking and with that rise
of culinary brilliance came culinary recognition. Partnering up with big Brands such as Knorr, Boardman’s SA, The Good Food and Wine show and Craft, Something’s Cooking started becoming a household name in the culinary industry. Displaying his skills on TV was a step up from simply having food envy when looking at his posts as an audience member.
Over The Rainbow
Fast forward to 2017 and Mr heaven sent himself has finally announced the launch of his pending restaurant Something’s Cooking by J in which we can finally taste all the decadent goodness we see on Instagram brought to life. The restaurant’s doors will open in April this year in the very trendy Time Square in Menlyn. He talks a bit about the menu on his website Jsomething.com, alluding to what we can expect post-launch;
“Something’s Cooking by J’Something is a home away from home. Its a non-pretentious, quality experience. Although the food itself doesn’t have a specific theme as per say, much like my music, it is honest food. It is flavour filled food. It is food cooked with love. These are recipes I myself created and served countless times in my home. There is a mixture between my Portuguese roots, my South African upbringing, and my latest obsessions such as Japanese cuisine and healthy alternatives.”
Most of my recent culinary reviews have been theme specifics, either eastern cuisine, Mexican etc so I am going a little out of my comfort zone on this one and just allowing my palette to guide me and my words. I am sure you can echo my sentiments when I say, it is about damn time these streets hosted a new chef on the block 😉
