I usually don’t do product reviews on MzSeri in the City but after speaking to a few friends who had asked me what makeup products I use on the daily, I thought I would share some of my tried and tested favourites.

Just a little disclaimer, I am in no way a makeup artist or beauty expert. My knowledge of all things make up related is limited to what I have learned on YouTube tutorials. Skincare, however – now that’s my baby. Moving on…

Don’t get me wrong, I love my Sorbet foundation, Body shop primers, Fenty Beauty lippies, and KKW contour kits and Ultralight beams. But if you know anything about these products, then you would know how crazy expensive it all is and well I have bills to pay, so buying these products every month is a no-no for my bank balance. As a result, I have found alternatives for everyday wear that does not break the bank but still provides a similar quality to what I am used to. So let’s begin:

L.A Girl Concealer

This drug-store buy is my all time favourite concealer. After saying goodbye to my beloved Mac concealers (and products) I needed a full coverage concealer that was hydrating. Que in the L.A Girl PRO Conceal. A little goes a long way and the best part is, it’s light enough to use as a foundation with all the coverage you would need.

Available at Dischem, Clicks, Takealot.

Avon True Color Foundation

This one isn’t available in drug stores but I added it here because of its affordability. Avon has really come a long way with their product varieties and the evolution of their products with South African skin. Apart from the decadently scented lipsticks, their Foundations have become a firm favourite for day-to-day use. Its a medium coverage foundation but it is extremely buildable which means you can craft your look the way you want. It’s also quite hydrating so it gives you a natural skin glow. If you are after a matte finish, I would not suggest this product. It is more for the dry skin that needs that extra flush of hydration.

Price: R249.90

Available through an Avon Agent or any Avon pop up store.

Essence Lash Princess Mascara

I cannot for the life of me get the application of false lashes right. I end up glueing my eyelids shut or worse – having them fall out an hour into my day. Plus the constant feeling of having something foreign on my eyelids is daunting. The solution for me was the Essence Lash Princess mascara. If you already have full lashes, this is the BEST mascara to boost the volume and length at a fraction of the cost of the Chanel favourites.

Available at Dischem, Clicks, Foschini & Takealot.

Wet n Wild Mega Glo Blush & Highlighter

I have only recently discovered the charm and perfection that is cream based blushes recently and after making my first Nudestix purchase, I have come to wonder why I never tried this sooner. As any makeup queen would know, having an alternative for daily use is imperative and so I introduce you to Wet n Wild’s Mega Glo blush stick. It’s ultra creamy and just the right amount of pigment is the perfect addition to a nude look. I also use the highlighter and contour stick as part of my nude looks which makes it a breeze for application.

Available at any Dischem and Clicks store nationwide.

Essence Lippies

I am sure you are familiar with the cutest brand available at most retail stores – Essence Cosmetics is one of my favourite entry level brands. It has everything you could ever need and their quality is exceptional. Sure, sure it isn’t your beloved Mac or Elizabeth Arden but it is not meant to be. It is every day make up that won’t let you down. Their lip shades are vast and their textures are stunning for any skin tone.

Price: From R59.00 – R89.00

Available at all Clicks, Dischem, Foschini Stores nationwide.

And there you have it. Drug store cosmetics for every day use so that you don’t go through your favourite designer brands in two weeks.
