Leading dermatologists are suggesting that the 5:2 approach can be applied to our beauty regime. According to skincare experts, going completely make-up free for two (consecutive or non-consecutive) days a week can result in younger, healthier looking skin in under a month.
Skin specialist Dr Esho, who is the founder of Le Beau Ideal aesthetics clinic, said:
‘I always tell my patients good skin starts from below your foundation. Overuse of make-up without appropriate breaks can accelerate the ageing process by damaging elastin and collagen, resulting in fine lines and ageing.’
He believes that going make-up free for two days a week helps promote skin cell turnover, which means the faster formation of new cells. Allowing healthy skin cells to regenerate gives rise to a more youthful, glowing complexion and reduces the risk of fine lines forming.
‘Like spring cleaning the house, it’s a good idea to spring clean the skin. Skin fasting is about stripping back and only using minimal skincare products in order to boost your skin’s natural healing and hydrating properties. It does this by reprogramming itself to adapt and self-heal. In the long run you will get much more from your skin.’
Bare in mind that it isn’t just the application of make up that does damage to your skin, it is also the removal of make up that adds to the slowly fading natural glow.
Harsh make-up cleansers or wipes contain large quantities of alcohol or irritants, which will dry and inflame the skin,’ explained Dr Esho.
